Terms of service
The short version
- Your work is yours. You own your documents, code, data, and figures. We only use them to run Align for you, and we don't train AI on them.
- Check what the AI gives you. It's a helpful assistant, not a guarantee. You're responsible for the figures you publish.
- Cancel anytime. Your plan stays active until the end of the month you paid for.
- Don't abuse the service. Use it for your own work, within the law.
Who you're agreeing with
Align (alignfigures.com) is operated by Sonali Narang. “We” means Align. By creating an account or using Align, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you use Align for an employer or institution, you're agreeing on their behalf as well, and confirm you're allowed to.
Your account
- You need to be at least 16 to use Align.
- Give accurate sign-up details, and keep your password and API tokens to yourself.
- An account is for one person. Don't share logins; use document sharing to collaborate.
- You're responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us quickly if you think it's been compromised.
Your content
You keep all rights to everything you put into Align or make with it: documents, code, data files, text, images, and the figures you export. We claim no ownership.
You give us permission to store, process, and transmit your content only as needed to run Align for you. That covers rendering, syncing shared documents, sending what you ask the AI about to our AI provider, and handling feedback reports you send us. The privacy policy spells out exactly what goes where. We don't sell your content or use it to train AI models.
You're responsible for having the right to use the content you bring, including data from studies, collaborators, or employers. When you share a document, the people you share it with can see and edit it according to the access you give them.
The AI assistant
Align's AI can write code, restyle figures, and answer questions. It can also be wrong: it can misread data, pick an inappropriate statistic, or produce a figure that looks right but isn't. Review its changes before you rely on them, and especially before you publish. You're responsible for the scientific accuracy of your figures. As between you and us, you own what the AI produces for you.
Acceptable use
Please don't:
- Break the law, or infringe anyone's rights, using Align.
- Upload data you aren't allowed to share or process, such as identifiable patient data without the necessary approvals.
- Try to break into, overload, or disrupt Align, or get around usage limits, credits, or billing.
- Scrape the service, resell access, or use it to build a competing product.
- Use the AI to generate content that is illegal, harassing, or meant to deceive (for example, fabricated research data).
Code you run in Align runs in your own browser. Don't use it to attack anyone else.
Plans, billing, and credits
- Paid plans are monthly subscriptions, billed in advance through Stripe, and renew automatically each month until you cancel.
- You can cancel anytime from your account page. You keep access until the end of the month you've paid for. We don't give partial-month refunds, except where the law requires it. If something went wrong with a charge, email us and we'll make it right.
- Student and education pricing requires a valid academic email address. We may ask you to re-verify it.
- AI usage draws on credits. Credits from a plan or a promo code are valid for the period shown on your account, have no cash value, and can't be transferred or refunded.
- If we change prices, we'll tell you by email before the change applies to your next billing period. You can cancel before it does.
Changes to Align
Align is young and improving fast. Features will change, and some may be labeled early access or beta and work less reliably. If we ever shut Align down, we'll give you reasonable notice and time to export your work. Your local documents are files on your own computer, so they stay with you regardless.
Ending things
You can stop using Align and delete your account at any time (see the privacy policy for what deletion does). We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, or to protect Align or other people. When we can, we'll warn you first and give you a chance to export your cloud documents.
Plugins and connected tools
The RStudio and Jupyter plugins, and AI tools you connect to Align, are covered by these terms when they talk to Align. Third-party tools you connect are also governed by their own terms.
No warranties
We work hard to make Align reliable, but we provide it “as is”, without warranties of any kind, including fitness for a particular purpose. We don't promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free. Keep your own copies of important work. Local documents are already files you control.
Limits on liability
To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost data, lost profits, or a rejected manuscript. Our total liability for any claim about Align is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or $100 if you haven't paid us anything. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, USA. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in New York County, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it locally. Before anything formal, please email us; most problems are easier to fix than to litigate.
Changes to these terms
We'll update this page and the date at the top when these terms change. For significant changes, we'll email account holders before they take effect. If you keep using Align after that, you accept the updated terms.
